2012 VCHM RACE REPORT

The 2012 Valley Crest Half Marathon welcomed two new Champions to its royal family.

This year’s Men’s Champion is 25-year-old Skyler Mosenthal who according to Google, is new to the trail race circuit having just placed 2nd overall at the Chesebro Half Marathon in March.  With what appeared to be perfect conditions for running, I was hoping to see a new CR but it was not to be!  Skyler’s time of 1:20:28 was a bit slower than the CR but still more than two minutes faster than second place Benjamin Maniatis and more than seven minutes faster than third place Jose Paredes.

35-year-old Mary Akor is a runner you should all recognize without needing to go to Google!  Coming off of her May 20th,, 2:39:49 and $6,000 prize money win at the 2012 Cleveland Marathon, Mary’s recovery run of 1:30:26 made her the new VCHM Female Champion.  I’m scratching my head wondering what attracted Mary to our little race; maybe it was the $300 in prize money, JK!  But it was probably because Mary knows that VCHM is the “Friendliest Race in L.A.”!  Everyone associated with the VCHM is pleased and proud to have Mary bring more prestige to our event and we hope Mary will come back next year and bring some friends!

BIG CONGRATULATIONS to our two new Champions!

Congratulations also go to four runners who broke/set Age Division CRs on Sunday:

F/20-24    1:34:32 2012            Abigail Swift

M/55-59    1:34:48 2012            Francisco Lopez

F/70-74    2:49:29 2012            Ellen Demsky
F/75-79    2:53:58 2012            John Williams

Honorable Mention goes to one runner, Harry Pantelas, who has run all eleven VCHMs and still holds the M/70-74 CR of 2:09:35, set in 2007!

You know we are the “Friendliest Race in L.A.”!  Here’s why…

Because we have the Friendliest Volunteers anywhere!  If you ran this race, you were met by more than 60 friendly faces SMILING BACK AT YOU…  smiling at 5:30 in the morning… smiling when you ran through their aid station… smiling when you limped out of the finish chute… So go to our Facebook Group today and give a big SHOUT OUT to our Volunteers for taking such good care of you!

And because have the Friendliest Sponsors Anywhere!  Gift certificates went to our overall winners sponsored by Fleet Feet Sports Encino; First/Second/Third Place Age Division gifts from Moeben Sleeves, Fuel Belt, Buff, and Injinji Socks; ice cold Gatorade on the race course; refreshing and healthy cold drinks at the finish line sponsored by Activate Drinks; plus support from RoadID; Sanctity Industries; SuperFeet; Yoga4Athletes.   So go to our Facebook Group today and give a big SHOUT OUT to our Race Sponsors who support you by helping the race.

We also thank Fernando Fernandez for bringing the entire cross-country team to help at the race. These are just some of the kids who benefit from the New Basin Blues High School XC Fund that the race supports. If you would like to know more about this non-profit fund or would like to make a tax deductable donation to put new running shoes on some x-c kids, go to www.newbasinblues.org and link to "X-C Fund".

So that’s why we are called the “Friendliest Race in L.A.”… It’s our rep and we are proud of it!

Hope to see you all next year on June 9, 2013 for the 12th Running of the “Friendliest Race in L.A.”!
Happy trails,
NSD
