2002 BullDog Race Report

by Ingrid Shattuck, R.D.

50K

Our 11th annual Bulldog 50K Ultrarun was again blessed with cooler temperatures. Thank God! The runners took off at 6:08 AM with great anticipation, everyone hoping to accomplish his/her goal.

Jorge Pacheco, 34 once again nailed down his number one position with a 4:04:35 winning time and still held on to his course record from 2001 of 3:54:56. Ann Langstaff, 41 had a 5:03:06 winning time, surpassing her own previous record (1999) by 5min. 54sec. – Go girl, go!!

Mike Swan and Peter Park had a race of their own fighting for the second place, with Mike edging Peter out by 10 seconds. An honorable mention goes to our local hero Jussi Hamalainen, 56. Eight times finisher, three times winner, always in the top ten, truly world class!

We had a number of 60-69 year olds, they were as usual a great inspiration for all of us. Most improved runner was Patricia Jackson, she vowed not to be last again and improved by over 1hr. 13sec. Keep it up Pat!!

We want to especially congratulate those participants who come back year after year. Thank you for your loyalty to the Bulldog family.

Last but not least we want ackknowledge the generous product donations for our runners from the following businesses:

Our fourth Bulldog 30K Trailrun was enthusiastically attended! As race directors, we enjoy seeing our "baby" emerge into a success story.

Dan Goldstein, 38 from Newbury Park, California set a blistering pace from the start and finished in 2:22:17, fabulous! First time participant Chrystee Perkins, 32 from Santa Barbara, California was the talk of the race by establishing a new course record of 2:38:02, beating the old course record (Kelly Park 2:55:35) by an amazing 17:33 minutes. Congratulations!

We also had twelve runners in total between the ages of 60 and 74. What an inspiration they are for all of us. And thanks to the out-of-State participants who joined us – we enjoyed having you run the Santa Monica Mountains with us. Robert Sollenberger from Virginia has honored us with his presents for three years now! He must be a gluten for punishment!

We want to especially congratulate those participants who come back year after year. Thank you for your loyalty to the Bulldog family.
