2012 BullDog Race Report

A LITTLE TALK WITH THE RUNNING GODS!

by Nancy Shura-Dervin

2012 BULLDOG 50K/25K RACE REPORT

After last year's Bulldog races heated up to a record 109 degrees, I had a little talk with the running gods the night before the start of the 2012 races. The first light of dawn on race day was thick with ocean fog and the temperature felt chilly as the 50K runners lined up for early morning bib pickup. It was with much relief that I conducted a trail briefing and sent the 50K runners on their way. The morning hours were cool and overcast and should have contributed to some very fast times but in the end, all the course records were broken by women!

Our 2012 Men's 50K Champion is 27-year-old Rickey Russell from Novato, CA. Rickey's 4:02:46 finish captured the win followed by 50-year-old Robert Leonardo (4:04:21) and 41-year-old Shawn Waco (4:13:25). Rickey only ran his first and second marathons (both trail races) in the last year with a best of 3:38:02.

The 2012 Ladies' 50K Champion is seasoned ultra runner Eileen Kickish (age 32) from Fountain Valley, CA in a time of 4:40:07. Second place female is the 2010 50K Champion, 41-year-old Maggie Beach (4:43:34) and 25-year-old Kristina Tudor (4:51:53) came in third among the females.

A new 50K Ladies F50-59 CR was set by Lora Zagnoli (5:21:24).

The 25K Trail Run was won by 32-year-old Benjamin Maniatis, who came in second overall at the 2012 Valley Crest Half Marathon in June! Benjamin's time of 1:49:45 was respectably ahead of second place Simren Dulai (1:53:49) and third place overall, who happened to be our 25K Female Champion Annie O'Donnell!

Hot off her first marathon and first 26.2 win in July at Salt Lake City's Desert News Marathon, Annie ran 1:54:01 to set a new Ladies 25K CR by 12:06! 2011 25K Champion Anissa Faulkner (40) came in second with a time of 2:03:31 followed by 37-year-old Susan Mitchell (2:25:12).

Honorable Mention to a few runners who were missed in the first publication of race results:
— 25K: Rachel Solis - F/41 - 2:50:00
— 25K: Russ Pillar - M/47 - 2:43:40
— 25K: Julio Pineda - M/33 - 3:13:30
— 25K: Greg Andrews - M/42 - 2:45:28
— 25K: Stanley Choi - M/54 - 3:07:30
— 50K: Brian Dooley - M/39 - 7:59:02
— 50K: Tyler Garewal - M/24 - 5:55:00

Being aware of the challenge of recruiting volunteers for a long, hot summer ultra, we had some fantastic new peeps step up to man (and woman) the aid stations! Bulldog Lateral Station 1&5 was again hosted by our "regulars" Dennis Ladnier, Karen Mohr, Bill Gearhart and Lynn Zink who were joined by newbie Andrea Kooiman and her ez-up shade tents! Corral Canyon Station 2&6 was completely taken over by Randy & Sarita Shoemaker and their 805 Boot Camp Gang! If you go to our race photos and check the Course & Scenery album, you will see Grand Central Station up there, complete with boiled, salted potatoes! Tapia Station 3&7 was adopted by Jimmy Dean Freeman and the Coyote Runners. Race participants told me that they could hear the "howling" for at least a mile as they descended down into the station! This year, we beefed up the MCSP Station by bringing the New Basin Blues team down from Corral to work Station 4. This added support gave the 50K runners a big boost and a little push as they started their second loop. Special thanks to Capt. Dan Westergaard and especially to Lisa Davis, who stayed until the very last 50K runner headed for the finish line.

We owe a huge debt of gratitude to our entire team of volunteers from the o-dark-early gate and parking monitors /bib pick up workers to the course sweepers and cleanup crew of one (thanks Murray Greenberg) and everyone in-between, including our CEMP Medical Team, the SFV Amateur Radio Club, and the cross country students from Reseda, Monroe and Panorama City High Schools. I wish we could list the names of every volunteer and say how much we appreciate you all!

Finally, but not least of all, BIG THANKS to our race sponsors who help with the awards, gifts and financial support of this event. Please take a moment to look at our Sponsor list and shop with our Sponsors http://www.trailrunevents.com/sponsors.asp!

The 2012 Bulldog Runs is dedicated to Ray Solis from the SFV Amateur Ham Radio Club who passed away on August 6. RIP Sweeper Ray.

Please mark your calendar for the 2013 Bulldog Trail Runs on Saturday, August 24!

Happy trails,
